Fundo Das Figueiras

Fundo das Figueiras is a charming place located in the northern area of Boavista, Cape Verde. This village, one of the three main places in the northern region, is known for its quiet and shaded streets, offered by the hibiscus and bougainvillea bushes that adorn the ground floor houses, painted with vibrant colors and contrasting shutters.

The village is famous for the celebrations of São João Batista, a traditional celebration that involves the entire local population. The church of this patron saint of the North is the focal point of the celebrations, which include evening mass, procession, horse race, popular lunch, parish auction, and dancing. During the month of June, in anticipation of the celebrations, inter-populated card tournaments are always held, culminating in the grand finale on the 23rd, the eve of the patron saint’s day.

Another significant event is the festival of Nossa Senhora Da Piedade, celebrated on August 15th, led by local youth groups with various activities. The church at the entrance of João Galego is dedicated to this saint and becomes the center of the celebrations.

Fundo das Figueiras is also a starting point for exploring the history and tradition of Boavista. The Rabil terracotta factory, the ancient Olarìa, is an interesting stop, where skilled craftsmen handwork the red earth and create graceful statues. The Viana Desert, with its dunes and magical silence, offers a unique experience. The northern villages, such as João Galego and Cabeça dos Tarafes, are known for being colorful, full of flowers, and hospitable people.

The volcanic landscape and the Morro Negro lighthouse represent another attraction, offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. Emotions are renewed along the way, changing direction and panorama, making every visit to Fundo das Figueiras an unforgettable experience.

In summary, Fundo das Figueiras is a place that captures the essence of Boavista, combining tradition, culture, natural beauty, and hospitality in a harmonious symphony that invites visitors to immerse themselves in the authentic life of the island. Its description not only attracts tourists but also those seeking a genuine experience and direct contact with the culture and traditions of Cape Verde.

EXCURSIONS THAT PASS HERE

HALF DAY MORRO NEGRO BY 4x4

4 hours

On the road to the history and tradition of Boavista, the first stop is the terracotta factory of Rabil, the ancient Olarìa, where skilled artisans work the red earth by hand and create very nice statues. Leaving Rabil we turn towards the Viana desert, formed with the sands that the winds bring from Africa: you can slide down from the dunes and walk to “hear” the magical silence of this place. The tour continue on a road still made of cobblestones, towards the villages of the North: João Galego, Fundo das Figueiras and Cabeça dos Tarafes, very colourful, full of flowers and hospitable people.

From Cabeça the path take a black run, crossing a surreal landscape of volcanic stones, which leads to one of the highest points of Boavista: the Morro Negro lighthouse. Then go for a 10 minutes walk, where the view on the Atlantic Ocean is breathtaking. On the way back the path is the same, but by changing the direction and view, the emotions are also renewed.
