Zocca

A LITTLE PARADISE IN THE ITALIAN APPENNINES

Zocca is a small mountain village with 5,000 inhabitants south of Modena and Bologna, born in an ancient area rich in hills and mountains on which many castles were built in the past (Monteombraro, Montecorone, Montetortore, Montalbano, Monte Questiolo, Rosola, etc.), the stage of several medieval battles between the people of Modena and Bologna, given its geographical location.

In 2014, the village twinned with Boavista, as a result of a cultural exchange between the two municipalities to highlight their affinities in terms of tourism, economy, and culture.

Zocca is known for the famous “crescentina” (or “tigella”), originally cooked in the fireplace with a chestnut leaf, which can be tasted in the establishments along the main street of the village. The “tigella” is a terracotta device to be heated in the embers and used to cook the “crescenta,” stacking 1 tigella, 1 leaf, 1 crescenta, 1 leaf, 1 tigella, and so on.

It’s also the headquarters of the “Compagnia della cunza” with an attached Borlengo Museum, a typical local specialty. In the autumn season, Zocca becomes the “Queen of Chestnuts,” thanks to the typical fruit of the area, along with the Marrone di Zocca.
