IMMERSE YOURSELF IN THE FABULOUS MARINE BIODIVERSITY OF BOAVISTA

Boavista offers several spots for snorkeling. Cape Verde is in the top 10 of the “Hot Spots” for coral biodiversity, even if there are no real coral reefs, there are a number of sites rich in coral varieties. Gatas Bay, on the NE coast of Boa Vista, perfectly combines natural conditions for both coral development and safe snorkeling.

“Gatas” refers to the local name of the little nurse shark (a species not dangerous for humans). Aggregations of these shark species occur in this area during the summer. The coral community found in this bay is characterized by hermetic hard coral species that support a particular diversity of marine life. Sal-Rei bay is also excellent for snorkeling, as it has shallow seabed and weak currents.

Pure snorkeling tours in the north are only possible at high tide, as at low tide, the bay becomes very shallow and the coral heads almost protrude from the sea surface. Snorkeling from the boat is possible every day.

Tips

– If you go for the first time, we advise you not to go there alone: the ocean is dangerous for those who do not know it, you could incur unexpected due to strong currents, rocks, rocks and sudden waves.

EXCURSIONS

SNORKELING IN 4X4

4 hours

The guide will pick you up directly where you are staying with a 4×4 pick-up.

Snorkeling tours are only possible at high tide, because at low tide, the bay becomes very shallow and the coral heads almost protrude from the surface of the sea. We will provide all the necessary equipment (wetsuit, shoes, life jacket, mask and snorkel), but we do not allow the use of fins in order not to damage the corals.
The trip to Gatas takes about 50 minutes from Sal Rei, and allows you to enjoy some beautiful landscapes that characterize the North of the Island. Normally the duration in water is 45-60 minutes, which are sufficient to observe a good quantity of fish and corals, but which do not exceed a normal fatigue threshold.

On the way back, there is a stop in a typical bar of a small village in the North to have a drink and have a snack.

No special technical knowledge is required, and the excursion ends where it started.

TRIP KAYAK

Have you ever tried kayaking in the sea? This recommended excursion is suitable for adults and children and will allow you to experience the contact with the sea and nature while respecting the environment and safety! After a brief explanation, you will quickly master the kayak (1, 2, 3, or 4 seats) and experience a unique feeling of freedom and adventure!

The tour takes place in the Estoril Bay, with always calm and crystal-clear waters. In about 20 minutes, you will reach the islet of Djeu, with a visit to the Duke of Bragança’s fort, where the guide will take you on a fascinating journey through the history of Boavista. You can also go snorkeling directly from the beach with the equipment we provide!

Upon your return, the “Style Wind Club” awaits you with a delicious lunch where you will savor the typical and simple flavors of Cape Verdean cuisine: freshly caught grilled fish, a buffet with plenty of healthy food options such as chicken, rice, and vegetables to satisfy everyone’s tastes!

FISHING WITH BARBECUE

6,5 hours

The guide brings you from your accommodation to the port. On the first stop, you can fish – everyone can participate – whether professional or beginner. Together you catch the fish for lunch (please note that it is bottom fishing). You will be amazed how many different fish we bring out of the sea.

Afterwards, the cruise goes through the beautiful bay of Chaves. The boat reaches the small island “Ilheu de Sal Rei” (“Djeu”) and here there is enough time to snorkel or swim. There is snorkelling equipment on board for you like “Easybreath” full face masks, that offer the highest level of comfort and hygiene because there is no mouthpiece.

Then you cross over to the small island with a rubber dinghy. While you explore the old fort, the sailor prepares the food, grilling the fish you’ve caught before, with fresh homemade salad, rice and fresh bread. Drinks are included. On request, is possible to have meat (please let us know when booking).
