Cabeça Dos Tarafes

Cabeça dos Tarafes, located in the northeast area of the island of Boavista in Cape Verde, is the smallest of the three towns in the so-called “north zone”. This small village is known for its celebrations in honor of São Joãozinho in June. The festivities include a mass at the local school, a popular lunch, and a coladeira dance, followed by those of São João Batista in the nearby towns of João Galego and Fundo das Figueiras. A distinctive element of the popular lunch is the so-called “matança do capode”, also known as faraona, which enriches the banquet, and June 25 marks the end of the festivities.

The village is characterized by the presence of a bar among its houses and its hospitable, colorful, and flower-filled people. The surrounding area offers a surreal landscape of volcanic stones, which leads to one of the highest points in Boavista: the Morro Negro lighthouse. From here, a short 10-minute walk offers a breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean.

Cabeça dos Tarafes is also a place to immerse oneself in the local life of Boavista through unique experiences. It is possible to visit a local farm, feed the animals, see how goat milk is produced, and how goat cheese is made. This experience allows for a better understanding of how Boavista’s farmers live, walking through green fields, breathing fresh air, and admiring the unique landscape.

Cabeça dos Tarafes is not only a place of celebration and tradition, but also a meeting point between local culture and untouched nature, making it an unmissable destination for anyone visiting Boavista. Through its authenticity and traditions, it offers a deep immersion into the life and culture of Cape Verde, emerging as a fascinating and welcoming destination.

On the road to the history and tradition of Boavista, the first stop is the terracotta factory of Rabil, the ancient Olarìa, where skilled artisans work the red earth by hand and create very nice statues. Leaving Rabil we turn towards the Viana desert, formed with the sands that the winds bring from Africa: you can slide down from the dunes and walk to “hear” the magical silence of this place. The tour continue on a road still made of cobblestones, towards the villages of the North: João Galego, Fundo das Figueiras and Cabeça dos Tarafes, very colourful, full of flowers and hospitable people.

From Cabeça the path take a black run, crossing a surreal landscape of volcanic stones, which leads to one of the highest points of Boavista: the Morro Negro lighthouse. Then go for a 10 minutes walk, where the view on the Atlantic Ocean is breathtaking. On the way back the path is the same, but by changing the direction and view, the emotions are also renewed.
