King of Djeu Kitesurfing Race
The King of Djeu is the new kitesurfing race taking place on Boa Vista island: the competition consists in monthly races from November till March, where the riders circumnavigate twice around the Ilheu de Sal Rei, nicknamed by locals as Djeu, starting and ending in front of the Morabeza Restaurant. This new series of races (four more are planned) join the Kite Downwind race from Sal till Boa Vista, now coming up to its fourth edition in February 2020.
The first King Of Djeu race took place on Sunday 8th December when winds conditions were favourable, and the second race is planned for Sunday 22nd December.
The enrolment started at 9:00am till 10:30am at the Race Desk at the Morabeza, followed by the Safety Meeting to debrief all the participants of the hazards, conditions of the site, and the rules of the race. After the warm up, the race started with 29 kiters in the water around 11:45am, an incredibly amazing sight. The winner Yuri Neves completed the circuit in approximately 30min, followed shortly after by all the other kiters.
The lunch was offered to the racers by Morabeza, followed by the price giving, and a sunset BBQ sponsored by the Kite Kriol School. The event was organised by Ulrich Frank and Kite4Change, and sponsored by Kite4Change, Spinguera, Morabeza Restaurant, Quadzone and Haans.
There are two categories for this race: Young Gun (U18), and Over 18, open both to locals and outsiders, no distinction based on gender.
On this first edition for the category of Young Gun the winners are
1 st Alessandro Guy
2 nd Santiago Lima
3 rd Zany Guy
For the Over 18 Category the winners are:
1 st Yuri Neves
2 nd Nicolas Starc
3rd Danilo Dionisi
The prizes for the winners in the Young Gun category were divided as follow: first place 3000CVE, second place 2000CVE and third place 1000CVE, whereas for the Over 18 first place won 9000CVE, second place 7000CVE and third place 5000CVE.
This first edition was a test run, with an unexpected number of riders… so there is a strong hope that next time more “outsiders” will join in the locals for the race.
